Resumen
Father Horacio Carochi's celebrated Arte de la lengua mexicana (1645) marked the highwater mark ofcolonial grammatical studies ofNahuatl. The Jesuit's masterful description of the language also influenced scholarship on it far beyond the end of the colony. He helped lay the foundations of an increasingly sophisticated body of work on early Nahuatl that began appearing over 300 years after his grammar appeared.
